Despite increasing digitalisation, Asia’s social sector is struggling to keep up with rapid technological changes due to inadequate access to digital infrastructure, lack of capacity and insufficient donor support, according to recent research by the Hong Kong-based Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society (CAPS).
CAPS' Doing Good Index 2024 survey collected data from 2,183 ‘social delivery organisations’ (SDOs) – entities engaged in providing a product or service that addresses a societal need – and 140 experts across 17 Asian economies.

With the prevalence of crises ranging from regional conflicts to climate change, Asia faces an uphill battle to create a more equitable future, CAPS co-founder and chair Ronnie Chan said in a statement introducing the report.
"The good news is that with increasing private wealth, Asia has a unique opportunity to leap ahead and implement policies and programs to solve community problems,” Chan added.
Use of digital technology has become commonplace in the social sector in Asia; 95% of SDOs use digital technology and 88% of them intend to increase their use of digital technology in the next two years.
